About the Author

Lissa Leege is a Professor of Biology and the founding director of the Center for Sustainability at Georgia Southern University. She earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from St. Olaf College and received her Ph.D. in Plant Ecology at Michigan State University. Her ecological research concerns threats to rare plants, including the effects of fire and invasive species on endangered plant populations and communities. She has also conducted 20 years of research on the impacts of invasive pines on the sand dunes of Lake Michigan and the subsequent recovery of this system following invasive species removal.

Lissa was instrumental in the development of an Interdisciplinary Concentration in Environmental Sustainability for undergraduates at Georgia Southern. Under her direction, the Center for Sustainability engages the campus in an annual “No Impact Week” and reaches the community with an annual GreenFest celebration, as well as a robust sustainability speaker series.

Lissa is involved with the environment on a statewide level as a member of the 2013 Class of the Institute for Georgia Environmental Leadership and a founding member of the Georgia Campus Sustainability Network. She serves on a local tree board, and as a board member for Georgia Southern’s Botanical Garden.

Lissa has taught non-majors Environmental Biology for 16 years with an emphasis on how students can contribute to environmental solutions. In 2006, she established an Environmental Service Learning project, through which thousands of Environmental Biology students have engaged in tens of thousands of hours of environmental service in the local community. Lissa was honored with both college and university service awards and has served as a faculty fellow in Service-Learning. She also teaches Principles of Biology, Biology of Plants, and graduate level sustainability courses, as well as Study Abroad sustainability courses in Italy. Her contributions to this book have been inspired by her passion for engaging students in positive solutions to environmental problems.

Author Norm Christensen is not only a world-class scientist (elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, is the founding dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment, and served as president of the Ecological Society of America) but is also a gifted and dedicated teacher who has taught the introductory environmental science course for over 15 years and won a Distinguished Teaching Award. He grew up in Fresno, California and received his AB and MS from California State University, Fresno. His PhD is from University of California, Santa Barbara and his research experience spans community ecology, disturbance and succession, ecosystem management, sustainable forest management, and forest fires. He is a professor at Duke University.

About the Author
Eric Coll is an international expert in telecommunications, data communications and networking and has been actively involved in the industry since 1983. He holds Bachelor’s and Master of Engineering (Electrical) degrees, and is licensed as a Professional Engineer in his home jurisdiction. Mr. Coll has taught telecommunications technology training seminars to wide acclaim across North America since 1992, and has broad experience working as an engineer in the telecommunications industry. He has worked for Nortel's R&D labs as a design engineer on projects including digital voice and data communications research and digital network equipment design; and on satellite radar systems; consulting on Wide Area Network design for HMO applications; and many other projects in capacities ranging from detailed design and implementation to systems engineering, project leader and consultant. In addition to being a Course Director for Teracom Training Institute, Mr. Coll provides consulting to the telecommunications industry, specializing in telecommunications technology R&D.

About the Author

BARBARA LOUNSBERRY is Professor of English and Distinguished Scholar at the University of Northern Iowa. Her books include The Art of Fact: Contemporary Artists of Nonfiction (Greenwood, 1990), The Writer in You (1992), and Writing Creative Nonfiction: The Literature of Reality (1996), edited with Gay Talese.

SUSAN LOHAFER is Professor of English at the University of Iowa. Her books include Coming to Terms with the Short Story (1983) and the coedited volume Short Story Theory at a Crossroads (1989). She has published short stories of her own and was the first elected president of the Society for the Study of the Short Story.

MARY ROHRBERGER is Professor of English in Residence at the University of New Orleans. She is the author or editor of a dozen books in the area of prose fiction, the majority on the short story. She is the founder and editor of the journal Short Story and the founder and Executive Director of the biannual International Conference on the Short Story in English.

STEPHEN PETT is Associate Professor of English at Iowa State University. He is the author of Sirens (1990), a novel, and Pulpit of Bones (1984), a book of poems. His short stories have been published in a number of journals, cited in Best American Short Stories, and have been honored with numerous awards. He is the editor of Flyway, a literary review.

R.C. FEDDERSEN is a doctoral candidate in literature at Oklahoma State University. He has long had special interest in the short story and has worked as Assistant Editor of Short Story as well as Assistant Coordinator for both the second and third International Conferences on the Short Story in English. Elder Thaddeus of Vitovnica was one of the most renowned spiritual guides of Serbia in the twentieth century. As a novice he lived in obedience to Elder Ambrose of Miljkovo Monastery, a disciple of the Optina Elders. From him Fr. Thaddeus learned the Prayer of the Heart and the selfless love that came to characterize his whole ministry to the suffering Serbian people.

Born in 1914, Elder Thaddeus lived through all the suffering endured by Serbia in the twentieth century. Over the course of two World Wars, during the Communist takeover, and through the nato bombings of 1999, he co-suffered with his people. He taught, counseled, and prayed for all who came to him in pain and sorrow. His words of love and hope provided spiritual balm for people from all classes of society.

In 2002 Elder Thaddeus reposed, leaving behind a large collection of his teachings, preserved by his faithful spiritual children. His life, teachings, and spiritual conversations are here presented for the first time in English.
