This is easily the best encyclopaedia of philosophy anywhere. The entries are really scholarly articles by largely U.S. specialists on those particular philosophers.The depth and quality of the writing and research is Inevitably. it has dated a little since the late 1960s when it was first published but I have no hestitation in saying this set of 4 invaluable books is the first 'go to' resource for anyone who wants to know about leading philosophers and philosophers. Paul Edwards, the Editor, was a very clear, precise and gifted teacher. First class in every way and a marvel to read.
Has a very detailed write up of a wide variety of topics throughout the ages.
Great set. There's now a volume 9 in print which is a supplement to the original 8-volumes.

This is a classic encyclopedia of Philosophy, I believe still the only printed edition of an encyclopedia inEnglish -- purchased at a bargain price -- about $30.

this is one of the major works of philosophy in the twentieth century and it is extremely readable and remarkably complete. Paul Edwards was a very astute editor and a terrific and clear writer.
