The Devil's Mouth (The Seven Kingdoms Chronicles Book 2)By Thomas Williams

Book 3 in the Seven Kingdoms Chronicles. In this sequel to The Crown of Eden, Thomas Williams takes the reader back to the mythical world of the Seven Kingdoms with a compelling medieval story of freedom, justice, and forbidden love.

When political conspirators murder his father, Prince Lanson of Lochlaund flees for his life. He becomes the protector of a beautiful tavern maid who is hiding from the moral condemnation of the powerful Lochlaund Kirk, a religious establishment ruled by a lecherous bishop which has a stranglehold on the kingdom. Ultimately Lanson must decide whether to give the woman over to the kirk's legalistic justice or defy the kirk and save her life by wedding her—a choice which could lead to a holy war.

From Publishers Weekly
Williams's second novel in his Seven Kingdoms Chronicles series is a sugarcoated Sunday school lesson at best and bland, formulaic pulp fiction at worst. Set in the same mythical, medieval world of the first installment, The Crown of Eden, the heroes and heroines must survive an oppressive kingdom whose Pharisaic ruling clergy enforce rigidly ascetic laws with no regard for mercy. A disgraced maiden running from the law falls in with a prince fleeing assassination; their adventures ultimately lead to the uniting of the seven kingdoms, the destruction of the evil witch Morgultha, and of course a lavish wedding. Along the way they learn of faith, love, mercy, evil and redemption. Unfortunately, this is far below the level of the Christian fantasies of C.S. Lewis or J.R.R. Tolkien. The plot seems driven by the author's efforts to deliver minisermons on religious subjects and to illustrate Christian principles and parables. The morals are too often delivered in stilted speeches and dialogues between cardboard characters; the wicked are evil through and through, while the righteous have hearts of gold and great physical beauty. The character references to Mary Magdalene and Christ are painfully blunt. As fantasy, the novel is disappointingly unoriginal and suffers from several breaches in logic in its mechanical plot. Young adults in search of light reading and a little sugar (in the form of princes, maidens, castles, kidnappings, rescues and a dash of true love) to help their religion go down smoothly may enjoy this; others should pass.

Editorial Review

Not since I read the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever, by Stephen R. Donaldson, have I become so engrossed in a novel as when reading The Devil's Mouth. The story is filled with intrigue and suspense. The characters are well developed: the reader becomes acquainted with the major characters, identifying and sympathizing with some, and feeling righteous indignation toward others.

Conflict between the leaders of the "kirk" (church) and the book's hero, Prince Lanson, adds an ingredient to the story that is highly relevant to modern readers. The tension between strict obedience to law with severe punishment for any violation on the one hand, and compassion, mercy, and forgiveness on the other makes for thoughtful reading. Conversations between the adversaries contain thought-provoking arguments that stimulate understanding. These exchanges are not dry dialogue. The reader gets mentally involved in the discussion.

In the story an effort is being made to form a confederation of the Seven Kingdoms in fulfillment of an old prophecy. There is treachery on the part of those who wish to prevent the confederation. Assassinations, kidnaping, exciting escapes, sword fights, and battle scenes are so well described you feel like you are there. Through it all a beautiful love story is tastefully developed between Prince Lanson and a commoner, the beautiful Evalonne, who has become a "fallen woman." In the end this love story provides a marvelous analogy of the gospel. the innocent suffers the punishment intended for the guilty, as love constrains willing substitution.

The Devil's Mouth is excellent fiction. Action, adventure, heroes and villians, good versus evil, and the ultimate triumph of right over wrong combine to make this book a must for Christian readers.
